A peninsula (Latin paeninsŭla) is the portion of land surrounded by water and linked to another land of greater extent by a relatively narrow.
In general, the water surrounding the earth is sea water, but also appear peninsulas in large lakes and even in other smaller areas of water such as estuaries or rivers. In many Celtic and Germanic languages and also in the Baltic, Slavic and Hungarian, the peninsulas are called 'half-island.
